University of Iowa Gardeners held an open house this past weekend to share their work with the Iowa City community as well as celebrate local foods.
During the event, community members were invited to participate in tours, workshops and a potluck.
“I like just getting my hands dirty, planting different plants and flowers,” said UI junior Jacob Estell. “It was a pretty cool experience learning about things I didn’t know.”
The UI Gardeners plant a variety of fruits and vegetables, from tomatoes and Kale to different kinds of berries. The produce is then sold or donated.
“We sell our produce to the IMU,” said Sophia Gunnink, a co-president of the organization. “If you’ve eaten in the River Room you’ve probably tried our produce.”
Some of their crops are also donated to the Johnson County Crisis Center.
