A new app created by students at the University of Michigan could offer a safer option to students walking home alone.
Companion App notifies friends and family if someone comes across a dangerous situation.
The app allows the user to connect as many “companions” as desired. If the built-in sensor detects anything suspicious, like a fall, sharp detours from the route indicated or if the user starts running, the “companions” are notified. Following the notification, a message is sent to the user asking if they are OK. If they do not respond in 15 seconds, an alarm is triggered on the device to scare off any potential attackers.
While most students said they thought the app would be helpful, a few said they didn’t think it solved the problem of being alone and encountering a potentially dangerous situation.
The app is free and available on Android and IOS devices.
