Hoping to stay hot after a three-game sweep against Indiana this past weekend, the Iowa baseball team will play host to Grand View today at Banks Field.

The Hawks have a 17-6 record including a perfect 3-0 in the Big Ten after the sweep.  

The wins mean Iowa is growing more and more confident.

“We’re an older and mature team whose confidence has been growing each week,” Iowa head coach Rick Heller said. “We can improve in a lot of areas, but I thought we pitched well this weekend, and that was something we hadn’t been doing the past couple weeks.”

Winners of five of the last six, pitching has been the story for most of the season for the Hawkeyes. 

Tyler Peyton, Blake Hickman, and Calvin Matthews have given the Hawks quality starts this season, and Matthews owns a team-leading 1.20 ERA.

And while the sweep, which featured Iowa’s first win over Indiana since 2012, has the Hawkeyes flying high, Heller knows that they are still far from where they need to be by the end of the season.

“It’s just like anything else — there are a lot of games left, and we’ve only gotten started,” he said. 

Inconsistent more than anything else, the Hawkeyes hope that playing outside in actual spring weather will boost some of their offensive totals.

Getting a crack at Grand View should help as well.

After three games of against one of the best teams the Big Ten has to offer, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics-member Vikings don’t loom quite so large.

Nevertheless, the Hawks will need to bring the same focus and energy that they had for Indiana.
