The Iowa softball team fell, 19-0, to Maryland on Sunday at Pearl Field, losing the three-game weekend series 2-1 to start Big Ten play.

The Hawks now stand at 10-22 on the season, and they mustered just 2 hits before being run-ruled by the Terrapins in the fifth inning. After tying the series at one with a 8-4 victory on March 21, the Hawks fell flat in all phases on Sunday.

It didn’t take long for the Terps to get their offense rolling. After scoring 8 runs in the first inning, they added 7 more in the second to take a commanding 15-0 lead. It was more than enough to easily cap the weekend with a win.

Sophomore Shayla Starkenburg started the game for the Hawks but failed to record a single out. She allowed just 3 earned runs on 5 hits in the March 21 victory and threw a complete game. But perhaps fatigue became a factor — she was a shell of herself in the blowout loss on Sunday and fell to 8-14 on the season.

Three batters after giving up a grand slam, Iowa head coach Maria Looper replaced her with Jillian Navarrete — who didn’t fare much better. She surrendered 8 runs in 1.1 innings of work and was replaced by freshman Ashley Yoways in the second. Yoways finished the game for the Hawks, allowing 7 more runs.

In the series, the Hawkeyes surrendered 38 runs in 19 innings over three games.

Offensively, the Hawks weren’t any better on Sunday. Junior Whitney Repole was Iowa’s lone bright spot, going 2-for-2 with the team’s lone  hits.

The stagnant offensive attack comes after two games of high productivity. In the series opener, the Hawks posted 14 runs, albeit in a loss. After adding 8 on 12 hits in the win the following day, they failed to get anything going in the series finale.

As much as the Hawkeyes struggled in the defeat, they still have plenty of conference play to go.

They will take on Nebraska in a double-header on Tuesday for an opportunity to get back on track in the Big Ten.
