Iowa 174-pounder Mike Evans was awarded the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor for his performance over the weekend at the National Duals.
Evans went 3-0 on the weekend, pinning Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Sean Mappes in 4:44, grabbing a 3-0 decision over Cornell’s Duke Pickett, and beating Missouri’s fifth-ranked John Eblen, 4-1.
“I think it was OK, I let the two tough matches I had, I kind of let those guys stay in those matches,” Evans said after Sunday’s finals. “I think I have more firepower to open those matches up.”
His decision over Pickett was also win No. 100 for Evans in his career. He is 24-1 on the season, 101-23 in his career.
The award is the first of Evans career and the fifth for Iowa this season. Brandon Sorensen and Bobby Telford have both been given the honor twice this season, and Iowa’s five are more than any other school in the conference.
The Hawkeyes will be off for several weeks as they prepare for the March 7-8 Big Ten championships in Columbus, Ohio.
