Serhat Tanyolacar, a University of Iowa Grant Wood fellow who previously caused controversy on campus with an art display, will speak at Kirkwood Community College today.
Tanyolacar will host a panel with other artists and community leaders from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the Commons Area of Kirkwood’s Iowa City campus, 1816 Lower Muscatine Road.
Tanyolacar sparked controversy early in December 2014 with a display of a Klu Klux Klan figure with a sheet made out of newspaper clippings regarding racial tension and oppression.
Many students on campus said the statue, which was placed on the Pentacrest, was deeply offensive and caused them to become fearful.
The figure was removed shortly after its appearance because the artist had not submitted an application to the UI administration for the space.
According to the Facebook event called “Fear of Fear of Art,” the discussion will cover free speech, controversy, and public space.
The event will also be live streamed over the Internet.
