The Iowa baseball team won two of its three opening weekend contests at the Snowbird Classic, highlighted by a 4-1 win over George Mason on Sunday.
The Hawkeyes used a trio of pitchers to beat the Patriots. Junior Calvin Matthews got the win, giving up just 1 run over five innings.
The run came in the first inning, then Iowa answered with a 2-run fourth inning to build a lead it did not give up.
Iowa added 1 run in the seventh and ninth innings to seal the victory. Iowa turned to senior pitcher Nick Hibbing in the sixth and seventh innings, and junior Luke Vandermaten closed the game, getting his first save in his first career appearance for the Hawkeyes.
Junior Joel Booker led the Hawkeye offense with a 2-for-5, 2-RBI performance at the plate. Senior Kris Goodman and freshman Austin Guzzo each added an RBI.
