On Feb. 7, the Iowa men’s gymnastics team lost to fourth-ranked Illinois, 440.150- 424.500, in Champaign.
“I am not happy with how we performed today,” head coach JD Reive said in a release. “We competed with fear and didn’t show up when we needed to. I thought we didn’t perform how we are capable. We are going to be competing against the top teams this season, and we are going to keep training like one this week.”
Illinois had the top three all-around scores on the night as redshirt senior C.J. Maestas, freshman Bobby Baker, and junior Joey Peters led the way for the Illini.
Illinios outscored the Hawkeyes in every event. Maestas posted a meet-high 15.800 on the still rings and senior Jordan Valdez added a 15.600 routine on the high bar.
Iowa did not have a score above 15.000 in any event, with its highest coming from junior Jack Boyle’s 14.900 on the rings.
The loss dropped the Hawks to seventh in the country in points per meet, one spot down from last week.
On Saturday, the Hawkeyes will host Minnesota and Nebraska in their final home meet of the season.
