The Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday discussed the Great American Smokeout.

The event usually takes place on the third Thursday of November each year since 1977. It was started by the American Cancer Society.

This year, the smokeout will fall on Nov. 20.

It aims to support Iowans who with to end their tobacco addiction. 

The smokeout helps to promote the health of Johnson County citizens by encouraging tobacco users to quit smoking for a day. 

Iowa residents are also encouraged to wear blue in order to support those who are looking to quit smoking.

In previous years, those who are addicted to tobacco have said it has been much easier to end their tobacco addiction after seeing that it was possible to go without it for an entire day.

The supervisors officially proclaimed Nov. 20 as the day of the Great American Smokeout.
