At the Iowa City School Board meeting Tuesday, officials discussed the development of safety precautions in district schools.
The 2013-14 Safety and Security Enhancement Plan allows schools to receive upgrades to their security systems, fire alarms, intercoms, security cameras, and access control systems.
In addition to the plan, the board approved a Change Authorization Request, an add-on to the project that will cost $68,4420.
Hoover Elementary, Longfellow Elementary, Mann Elementary, and Shimek Elementary are part of the request for additional upgrades.
The addition will include three Uninterrupted Power Supply Units, three more card reader units, and additional fire-alarm work. Work and material to upgrade the intercom system at Shimek and materials for adding audio-video equipment will also be included.
Currently, the district is spending $3.7 million on renovations across the district.
School Board President Chris Lynch said money will continually be spent on this project.
“It’s a rolling schedule,” he said. “The schools are in different phases of completion.”
Twain Elementary and Van Allen Elementary schools are estimated to be the first schools fully renovated. By the fall of 2015, work at the schools should be completed.
