The Iowa field-hockey team went 1-1 on its latest road trip, falling 2-0 to Michigan State on Oct. 17 before rebounding for a 4-2 victory over Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday.
The weekend moves the Black and Gold to 10-5 overall, 3-3 in the Big Ten.
The Hawks stumbled in East Lansing, failing to generate any meaningful offense against the Spartans. It was their third-straight loss to a Big Ten opponent.
Defensively, the Iowa hung with the Spartans for a full 70 minutes, limiting the Michigan State offense to just three shots in the second half.
Offensively, Iowa was stymied despite a dominant 18-9 advantage in shots and 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Michigan State goaltender Sierra Patton made 10 saves en route to a shutout.
Luckily for interim head coach Lisa Cellucci, the Iowa offense was able to find its footing Sunday, snapping their Big Ten losing skid against the Buckeyes.
“We played a solid game today and were able to get some early goals on the board, which gave us great confidence,” Cellucci said. “We had a much greater defensive presence, and that really helped generate our attack.”
The game included sophomore Chandler Ackers scoring the first goal of her college career, as well as tallies from team leaders Steph Norlander and Natalie Cafone.
Freshman Mallory Lefkowitz also added her third goal of the season to ice the game for the Black and Gold.
Goalkeeper Alex Pecora earned her ninth win of the season for the Hawks as well, withstanding a late push from the Buckeyes to help ensure the game for Iowa.
