Iowa men’s tennis senior Matt Hagan lost to the No. 3 player in the country, Alex Alvarez, in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament Monday.
After winning two matches on both Saturday and Sunday, Hagan took Oklahoma’s Alvarez to three sets but ultimately lost (5-7, 6-3, 6-4).
For his effort, Hagan became the first Hawkeye to reach the semifinals in a regional tournament since Tyler Cleveland in 1999. He is also the third Hawkeye all time to accomplish the feat.
Hagan and company will compete next from Oct.31-Nov.3 at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Minneapolis.
