Authorities have accused a local man of not paying off a check for more than $3,000.
Vincent Chmielewski, 37, was charged June 22, 2013, with second-degree theft.
According to an Iowa City police complaint, Chmielewski wrote a check drawn on his Veridian Credit Union account to Nagle Lumber in exchange for merchandise.
The total amount of the check was $3,672.45, and was returned unpaid because of insufficient funds.
In the following weeks, there was never enough funds in Chmielewski’s account to cover the check, the complaint said.
Second-degree theft is a Class-D felony.
