Derek St. John and Jessica Barnett were recently named Iowa’s 2013 Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
St. John, a junior wrestler, capped a 31-2 season with the 157-pound national championship at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines in March. It was St. John’s first career national title. The Parnell, Iowa, native is the 32nd three-time All-American in school history.
St. John was the recipient of Iowa’s Mike Howard Most Valuable Wrestler Award and the Mike J. McGivern Senior Award for being the most courageous wrestler.
Barnett ended her Hawkeye career with 77-consecutive starts — which was every single game of her Black and Gold field-hockey career. The North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native was also the 2012 recipient for Iowa’s Female Athlete of the Year.
Barnett was named a two-time All-American during her four years as a Hawkeye and served as the team’s captain two-straight years.
