A pair of former Iowa wrestlers — Brent Metcalf and Phil Keddy — will wrestle in the Stepan Sargsyan Cup on Saturday in Vanadzor, Armenia.
Metcalf will wrestle at 66 kilograms, and Keddy will compete at 84 kilograms. Both will weigh in on Friday and compete the next day. Both are set to wrestle freestyle.
In addition to America, the following teams will also participate in the cup: Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Iran, Iraq, Russia, Uzbekistan, Greece, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Italy, Turkey, Poland and China, according to the event’s informational flier.
The Wrestling Federation of Armenia will award money prizes for each weight category. A first-place finish earns $3,000, second place garners $2,000, and third gets $1,000. Top finishers also earn cups, diplomas, and medals.
Metcalf qualified for the 2013 World Team in late June at the same weight he’ll wrestle at this weekend. He’ll represent the United States at the 2013 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in September.
