The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association have named the Iowa women’s track and field team an all-academic team for the ninth-straight season.
The Hawkeyes combined for a team grade-point average of 3.19 through the 2013 indoor and outdoor seasons.
A team must have a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the end of the NCAA championship season in order to qualify for this distinction. Iowa was one of 10 Big Ten schools to make the list, which comprises 187 Division I women’s track and field teams.
The association also named six Hawkeye student-athletes to the Division I All-Academic Track & Field team. Mareike Schrulle, Jasmine Simpson, Annemie Smith, Kyle Reid, Keaton Rickles, and Ben Stancombe were among the more than 1,000 Division I student-athletes to earn the honor. The Big Ten has 146 academic honorees —more than any other conference.
Student-athletes must compile a cumulative GPA of 3.25 in order to qualify for the All-Academic Track & Field Team, in addition to meeting either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, the student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I meet.
“One of our clearly defined goals every year is academic excellence,” Iowa track and field coach Layne Anderson said in a release. “To earn this recognition for the ninth-consecutive year and have six individuals achieve individual academic honors is a strong statement for the track and field program.”
