Incoming Iowa freshman Katharina Trost ran to a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters at the 22nd European Athletics Junior Championships this past weekend.
Trost posted a lifetime best of 2:03.59 in the event’s semifinals. That time would be a school record at Iowa. Former Hawkeye All-American Bethany Praska set the current 800 meters school record —2:03.78 — in 2011.
Trost finished the finals with a time of 2:04.34 for her fifth-place finish.
“Katharina had a wonderful opportunity to represent Germany in international competition for the first time, and she took full advantage,” Iowa track and field coach Layne Anderson said in a release. “She will arrive on campus in a few weeks with a lot of great momentum and what we anticipate will be great Hawkeye academic and athletic journey so far.”
The event was held at the Raul Guidobaldi Stadium in Rieti, Italy, and lasted from July 18 through Sunday.
