A student attending a high-school summer journalism camp at the University of Iowa reported an assault in downtown Iowa City on Monday.

UI officials reported the incident to the Iowa City police, and the student was then transported to the UI Hospitals and Clinics for medical attention by Johnson County Ambulance, according to a Tuesday UI press release.

The student’s parents were immediately notified by UI officials about the assault, and the student decided to return home. Other students in the program as well as their parents were notified Tuesday about the incident.

Iowa City police Sgt. Dave Droll said the early Monday afternoon assault did not take place on the UI campus but was in proximity to campus boundaries.

The student was sent to the UIHC for medical attention shortly after the incident, he said, and no eyewitness accounts or specific leads were available as of Tuesday evening.

“Given the time of day, it’s a little unusual,” he said, adding that no identifiable pattern has been made to a crime that generally stems around bar-closing periods.

Despite the assault, Droll said, law-enforcement officials have not identified a general increase or increase in reported assaults.

Iowa Summer Journalism Workshops Director David Schwartz declined to comment on the matter, including whether or not the student violated curfew or safety measures, and deferred all comments to UI spokesman Tom Moore.

Moore said in-place safety protocols and there relating guidelines, which include being accompanied by an adult at times, signing in and out of workshop functions, and complying with curfews, are in place for reasons relating to Monday’s incident.

“The safety of students is the top priority of the university, and we encourage anybody to take the steps needed to ensure safety,” he said.
