Flood-prevention cleanup efforts continue in Iowa City, and volunteers are needed to remove sand from bags.

After more than a month since the University of Iowa and Iowa City began a new round of flood mitigation and prevention efforts, the retrieval of sandbags is complete, a Tuesday city press release said.

Positioned near residential and commercial business areas that were threatened by the rising Iowa River, the bags have been returned to the Streets Complex, 3800 Napoleon Lane, for storage.

Before sand can be used in winter street sanding and additional public-works projects, however, the bags must be emptied.

The city has requested volunteers to aid in this effort.

From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, area volunteers 14 years and over can check in at the Streets Complex.

Individuals under 18 are required to have parents sign  liability waivers to participate.

Although water will be provided to those who participate, volunteers are required to wear closed-toe shoes and are asked to provide a box cutter or utility knife, bug spray/repellent, and sunscreen.
