An Iowa City man has been charged after allegedly setting fire to a motel mattress in Iowa City.
Chad Clark, 47, was charged June 30 with first-degree arson.
According to an Iowa City police complaint, officers responded to the Iowa City Hampton Inn after receiving a report that an individual was on the phone with a man who was believed to be suicidal and had lit his mattress on fire.
Upon arrival, police reportedly found Clark as the sole occupant in the smoke-filled room.
Iowa City firefighters determined that the room’s smoke alarm system had been disabled.
Officers then spoke with the caller who stated that she was told by Clark while on the phone with him that he had set his mattress on fire, that he was “in a bad place,” and that he was going to “take himself.”
First-degree arson is a Class-B felony.
