An Iowa City man has been charged with carrying a number of large knives while he approached people near the Waterfront Hy-Vee.

Jose Nunez, 46, was charged June 29 with carrying weapons after he was allegedly walking around in a street approaching people and acting delirious with weapons on him.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, officers arrived at 1410 Waterfront Drive, where they said they found Nunez in the street with several large knives tucked in his belt.

Officers made contact with Nunez and they recovered two steak knives.

He had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, unsteady balance, and smelled of ingested alcohol, the complaint said.

Nunez admitted to drinking on that day and “every day.”

He posted a pre-arrest preliminary breath test of .240 and refused a post-arrest preliminary breath test.

Nunez has six previous public-intoxication convictions, with the two most recent ones being on July 5, 2012, and Oct. 3, 2012.

Carrying weapons is an aggravated misdemeanor.
