The son of a Johnson County Republicans Chairwoman Deborah Thornton was appointed to a non-voting position on a state board on May 3, according to a press release.
Edgar Thornton, 16, was appointed to the state Board of Education.
According to the release, "a non-voting student member is expected to represent the ideas and views of a current user of the system and provide unique input and insight to the opportunities, challenges, and issues our students face."
The younger Thornton has been in the Iowa City School District since second grade, and he participates in numerous activities at City High, 1900 Morningside Drive.
His first meeting with board will be Thursday in Des Moines.
