The state Board of Regents received the retention and graduation rates report on Wednesday.
The regent universities retained 85 percent of the entering class of 2011 classified as non-minority students, while they retained 84.3 percent of minority students as a whole in the same class.
University of Iowa President Sally Mason said the UI continued to develop the living-learning community program as an effort to retain students at the UI.
Regent President Craig Lang said he was pleased overall with the rates at the universities in comparison to the national average and the improvements marked by the universities.
In the last 10 years, the average one-year retention rate for the UI was 83.8 percent, while Iowa State University’s rate was 84.9 percent and the University of Northern Iowa’s rate was 81.9 percent.
The national average one-year retention rate in 2012 was 76.7 percent.
