An Illinois woman has filed a suit against the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, claiming the loss of the mobility and use of her arm.

According to a court document, on Feb. 9, 2010, Emily Rumfelt was scheduled for heart surgery at the UIHC. She was reportedly put under anesthesia for the duration of the procedure.

While Rumfelt was under the anesthesia, it allegedly spread to her arm, causing compartment syndrome and she lost the use of her arm. Compartment syndrome is increased pressure in a muscle compartment that can lead to muscle nerve damage. 

Following emergency care of the compartment syndrome, physicians attending to Rumfelt told her family she would be “out of harms way” in 24 hours. Approximately 24 hours later, Rumfelt suffered a stroke and loss further permanent function of her body, according to the court document.

Rumfelt is seeking compensation for medical expenses, past and present pain and suffering, and past and present emotional distress.
