Charles Thompson will not serve any additional time in jail for his involvement in the 2009 slaying of Iowa City landlord John Versypt.

Thompson, 20, was charged with accessory after the fact, an aggravated misdemeanor.

According to a written entry of judgment submitted Feb. 14, the former Iowa City resident was sentenced to no more than two years in prison. The sentence was subsequently discharged because Thompson has already served more time than was required.

Thompson was the initial primary suspect in Versypt’s murder and served time while he awaited his 2011 first-degree murder trial.

Investigators believed Thompson and two other men — Justin Marshall and Courtney White — conspired to rob Versypt, the owner of Broadway Condominiums, 1960 Broadway, but the mugging went awry, which resulted in Versypt’s shooting.

Thompson signed a plea agreement claiming Marshall pulled the trigger, and the state of Iowa brought Marshall to trial.

Thompson testified against Marshall and said he saw the convicted murderer change his clothes shortly after Versypt’s body was found.

After weeks of testimony, the jury found Marshall, 22, guilty of first-degree murder on Feb. 7.
