Karen Shemanski of Human Resources gave an updated presentation on the new Integrated Talent Management Program at a University of Iowa Staff Council meeting on Wednesday.
The program will be used to help evaluate university staff members on their performance using different competencies they are expected to be proficient in for their positions.
She said that in the new program, each position is made up of two components: The first being the key area of responsibility, or the "what" the employees do, and the second being the competency, or the "how" they do their jobs.
Shemanski said the two competencies — universal and technical — will provide a new framework for job performance and expectations.
Universal competencies will be required from all staff members, such as having a positive effect in their environments and achieving results in their work.
Technical competencies are tailored to each position, and there will be numerous choices for individual employees to focus on at one time.
Staff members will be able to access their universal and technical competencies in their e-personnel profiles so they can be aware of what is expected of them.
Shemanski said the key to a positive performance evaluation under the new program is a balance of competencies.
"You could be a really great programmer, but if your customers don’t want to work with you, you only have one half of the pie," she said.
