The beer of the week is Goose Island’s Sofie, a Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale.
Bottled in Chicago, the saison brew is aged in oak barrels with orange peels and fermented with wild yeasts.
Because of the tart, dry flavor, the award-winning beer is recommended by Goose Island as an “intriguing choice” for champagne drinkers.
“It has some nice citrus notes,” said Joe Hotek, the beer-room manager at John’s Grocery. “You also get some oaky tones because of the barrels it’s aged in.”
Sofie contains 6.5 percent alcohol by volume and features an attractive, golden champagne color. It is brewed using Amarillo hops and malt of the pilsner and wheat varieties.
“It’s a great complement to lighter summer meals,” Hotek said. “It would pair especially well with a salad or some fish.”
Goose Island’s website describes the beer as a complement to seafood with “lighter flavors” such as fresh oysters and as a contrast to rich shellfish such as lobsters.
