Iowa softball catcher Liz Watkins was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Monday. The junior hit .714 while leading Iowa to a two-game sweep over Ohio State this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio, to earn the award for the second time in her career. She also accounted for six RBIs and scored three runs.
Watkins put together a 4-for-4 performance at the plate on March 26, tying her career-high for hits in a game. She then opened Sunday’s game with a three-run home run. Her six home runs this season lead the Hawkeyes.
Watkins, who last won the award on March 29, 2010, is the second-consecutive Hawkeye to win it this season — senior Stephanie Ochoa won it on March 29. Watkins shares the honor this week with Penn State sophomore Cassidy Bell, who hit .667 while helping the Lady Lions to a series sweep over Wisconsin.
Iowa will play at Western Illinois on Wednesday.
