Johnson County Auditor Tom Slockett spoke with the Johnson County Board of Supervisors Thursday about requests to waive or refund late-penalty and interest charges on property taxes.
Slockett recommended that the supervisors deny these requests because of a county code that states a failure to receive notices in the mail is not an excuse to miss a payment.
While Supervisor Rod Sullivan said he understands homeowners’ confusion over lost mail, waiving one fee would create problems down the road.
Supervisor Chairwoman Sally Stutsman said it’s the homeowners’ responsibility to find out why he or she did not receive tax forms.
The motion was denied.
