Two UI researchers, Kevin Campbell and Michael Welsh, have been reaffirmed spots for the next five years as investigators at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland.

Campbell holds the Roy J. Carver Biomedical Research Chair in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. He also teaches internal medicine and neurology. Campbell’s research has improved the understanding of muscular dystrophy disease and its diagnosis process, according to a UI news release.

Welsh, who holds the Roy J. Carver Chair of Internal Medicine and Physiology and Biophysics, currently directs the UI Cystic Fibrosis Research Center and will soon take the position of director of new Papajohn Institute. He is internationally known for his findings on cystic fibrosis, according to the release.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute in a nonprofit medical research organization that is recognized for its advancements in science education and biomedical research. In addition to Campbell and Welsh, UI professors Val Sheffield and Edwin Stone are current investigators.
