Patti Fields was elected president of the Iowa City School Board at Tuesday’s School Board meeting. Mike Cooper — who was recently re-elected to the board — took over the position of vice president.
Fields ran against the former president, Toni Cilek, while Cooper ran alone.
Both were elected by their fellow School Board members. Because of a recent change in state legislation, board members were unclear whether the terms would last for one or two years.
Board member Gayle Klouda — the former vice president — nominated Cilek as vice president, but Cilek declined to run. She said she would like to try making decisions from an entirely different position on the board.
The elections took place after new board members Tuyet Dorau and Sarah Swisher were sworn into their positions.
Former board members Tim Krumm and Jan Leff were recognized with plaques from Superintendent Lane Plugge.
