Suspect in the April 19 Pedestrian Mall Shooting, Damarian Jones, of Cedar Rapids, was taken into custody near Atlanta, Georgia, according to a news release from the city of Iowa City.
Damarian, 17, faces the following charges:
- five counts of attempted murder
- three counts of willful injury assault causing serious injury
- two counts of willful injury assault causing bodily harm
- going armed with intent.
Damarian is currently in custody in the Clayton County Jail in Georgia and will be extradited to Iowa pending a hearing in Georgia, according to the news release.
Of the five people injured in the shooting, three are University of Iowa students. One remains hospitalized.
According to the Iowa City Police Department, video evidence shows Damarian engaging in a fight involving 40 people in downtown Iowa City at roughly 1:45 a.m. on April 19.
Dustin Liston, chief of police for the Iowa City Police Department, said in an April 22 news conference that Damarian obtained a firearm from another individual and fired six shots, including shots to the victims’ chest cavity, arm, leg, stomach, and head. The victim struck in the head remains in the hospital.
In the news conference on April 22, Johnson County Attorney Rachel Zimmerman Smith said Damarian would be apprehended in the Johnson County District Court, with initial charges filed in adult court, as all forcible felonies committed by an individual 16 or older are not tried in juvenile court.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
