The Iowa track and field teams hosted the Musco Twilight on May 1 and 2 at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer track in Coralville, while also sending a group to the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, on May 2. The Hawkeyes combined to win eight titles at both meets.
On Friday, Iowa opened the Musco Twilight with the men’s and women’s hammer throw. In the women’s hammer, Peyton Wilson and Josephine Flynt started the day by breaking the 60-meter barrier for the first time in their careers. Wilson won the event on her final throw at 60.95 meters, while Flynt placed second at 60.79 meters on her last attempt as well.
In the men’s hammer, Ryan Johnson won the title with a throw of 74.60 meters. Sean Smith placed second with a throw of 66.88 meters, and Tate Joens followed closely behind, finishing in third with a throw of 66.30 meters. Austin Busch rounded out the top five with a 58.99-meter throw.
On Saturday, Isabel Evans opened the day by securing the 100-meter hurdle title, running a 14.22. In the women’s 3,000-meter race, Rowan Boulter clinched the win with a personal best 10:07.11.
Bryce Ruland opened the field events with the men’s discus title, throwing a lifetime best of 58.02 meters. He improved his eighth-place all-time mark in school history. Wisdom Williams secured the win in the shot put, landing a mark of 15.37 meters.
Freshman Landon Prince made his Iowa discus debut, throwing 50.35 meters to finish fourth overall. Sophomore Duke Faley rounded out the performances in sixth with a throw of 49.98 meters. Later, Ruland secured another personal best in the shot put, throwing 18.03 meters and finishing in third.
In the men’s 800, freshmen Owen Wolfe and Spencer Alf finished with personal bests. Wolfe placed third with a 1:51.27, and Alf finished fourth with a 1:51.48.
At the Desert Heat Classic, David Akhalu and the men’s 4×400 meter relay secured wins. Akhalu ran a lifetime best of 45.05 to win the 400-meter dash and move up to fourth in school history. The men’s 4×400 of Tyrese Miller, Landon Fontnot, Prior Ochonogor, and Terrick Johnson ran a 3:06.35.
In the women’s 4×400 relay, the quartet of Izzy Zahn, Olicia Lucas, Alivia Williams, and Damaris Mutunga finished in second with a time of 3:32.14, clocking Iowa’s ninth-fastest time in school history.
In the 4×100 relays, both the men’s and women’s squads continued to stand strong. Darwin Jimenez, Jordan Gross, Jaylin Holmes, and Kalen Walker tied the school record with a second-place finish in a time of 38.64 in the men’s relay. On the women’s side, Jailya Ash, Alexandria Edison, Alivia Williams, and Holly Duax matched Iowa’s third-fastest time of 44.04 to finish fourth.
In the 100-meter, Walker and Jimenez earned top-five finishes. Walker placed second with a time of 10.19, and Jimenez finished fourth in 10.23.
Junior Princess Uche led the Hawkeyes in the 400 meters. She moved into the seventh all-time spot at Iowa and finished in second with a time of 52.10. On the men’s side, Tyrese Miller ran a personal best 45.88 and updated his time on Iowa’s all-time list at the ten spot. Landon Fontenot ran a 45.92 and Austin Rowswell ran a 46.66, both clocking personal bests.
In the 400 hurdles, Ochonogor took second in 49.88, while Vaughn DeVaughn II finished in 50.43, taking third and moving into Iowa’s top 10 all-time list. On the women’s side, Ali Frandsen crossed the line in 58.94 and finished in fifth.
Terrick Johnson ran a 1:46.87 in the 800-meter and posted Iowa’s third fastest time in school history while finishing in fourth. Caleb Levy finished in 1:48.28 and updated his personal best.
In the long jump, Emmanuel Njoku landed 7.59 meters and claimed second on the men’s side. Lovisa Ulvenstram took fifth and set a new personal record of 6.13 meters, and is now on Iowa’s all-time list at number seven.
Iowa finished with ten top-10 record book adjustments in Arizona.
