The Iowa men’s golf team travelled to North Plains, Oregon, this past weekend to compete in the Big Ten Championships. The team finished in 15th place out of 18 teams.
“It was a tough day for us,” Iowa head coach Tyler Stith told HawkeyeSports. “I’m disappointed to finish the tournament and the season like that. I know the guys are disappointed as well. We couldn’t sustain any momentum in our rounds.”
First-year Bennett Warren led the Hawkeyes, tying for 34th individually with a 6-over-par. He was followed by redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel at 47th, junior Max Tjoa at 65th, sophomore Ryan Shellberg at 72nd, and redshirt freshman Jack McCarty at 81st.
In round one, Gudgel recorded a 1-over-par 71, finding himself in 22nd place individually at the end of the day.
Gudgel opened with two birdies in his first three holes, finishing with five on the day and the third-most in the field. Meanwhile McCarty shot a 2-under-par 33 on his back nine, helping the Hawkeyes finish the day strong.
Beginning day two, Warren notched five birdies in his 2-under-par 68 round, making the second biggest jump amongst all golfers on Saturday, moving up 38 spots. He would finish the weekend with 13 birdies, fourth-most in the field, and scored an eagle on the second hole.
“Bennett played solid,” Stith said. “He started strong, had a little trouble on his ninth hole but recovered well and made a great par save on his last hole. I’m very happy for him.”
On day three, Shellberg tallied the low score for the Hawkeyes, shooting a 1-over-par 71, with five birdies and six bogeys.
UCLA took the honors, shooting an 8-under-par total team score. UCLA’s Josh Kim earned medalist honors with an 8-under-par (202) individual score. He was three strokes in front of the runner-up.
The Hawkeyes did not have enough to earn a regional bid, ending their 2025-26 season. The only graduating senior is Gage Messingham.
Tyler Stith will return to the Hawkeyes for his 13th season as the head coach, returning six players as well.
