A GoFundMe has been organized by Janjay Peters to raise money to help her sister Miranda Peters, a survivor of the shooting on April 19 in Iowa City and a student at the University of Iowa, recover from her injuries.
The fund, started on April 29, has raised over $110,000 as of 2 p.m. on May 1.
In a video posted to her TikTok account, Janjay Peters said her sister was downtown that night to get food when a gunman fired shots into a crowd where her sister sustained a gunshot wound to her head.
“She didn’t deserve this, no one deserves this,” Peters said in the video. “My sister is the most sweetest, most kind, most respectful individual you will ever meet.”
In the video, Janjay Peters said people oftentimes hear about gun violence and shootings on the news, but can’t imagine the possibility of it happening to them or a loved one.
“I don’t even feel real making this video right now,” Janjay Peters said. “My life doesn’t feel real right now, this doesn’t feel real at all, but it’s real.”
The GoFundMe states Miranda Peters is still in the hospital and in the intensive care unit.
On April 30, Janjay Peters posted an update to the GoFundMe and said her sister’s recent tracheostomy procedure had gone well, giving the family a bit of relief.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a tracheostomy is a procedure where a hole is surgically created in the neck to create an alternative airway for breathing.
“She is being closely monitored, and we’re still taking things one moment at a time,” Janjay Peters said in the update.
As Janjay Peters and her family have been at Miranda Peters’s side this past week, Janjay Peters said she and her family appreciate the support from the community.
“The love and support we’ve received has been overwhelming in the best way,” Janjay Peters said in the GoFundMe update. “Every donation, every message, every prayer, it all means so much to my family and I. We feel it, and we’re so grateful.”

University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson said in a statement to The Daily Iowan that the UI community and health care professionals have worked tirelessly and will “continue to lead with care, compassion, and support.”
“These past two weeks have been incredibly difficult. We continue to hold Miranda and her family close to our hearts. We are also thinking about the other four victims as they continue to heal,” Wilson wrote in the statement.
UI Campus Safety did not respond to The Daily Iowan’s request for comment at the time of publication.
