Iowa men’s basketball landed its first transfer of the 2026 portal cycle, as former Illinois State guard Ty’Reek Coleman announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes on Friday, April 17.
Coleman, and Aurora, Illinois, native, played in 35 games for the Redbirds as a freshman in 2025-2026, averaging 10 points, 1.8 assists, and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field and 41.6 percent from beyond the arc.
The 6-foot-2 guard logged a career-high 24 points against Cornell on Nov. 9, where he shot 6-of-8 from the floor. Coleman also logged 16 points against USC on Nov. 14.
In High School, Coleman was a two-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State selection. He scored 1,339 career points and holds the Waubonsie Valley High School record for most steals with 168.
Coleman played a crucial role in Illinois State’s best season in almost 10 years, and in his final game as a Redbird, he scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting in an 88-66 loss to Aurburn on April 2. Coleman joins the Hawkeyes with three years of eligibility remaining as head coach Ben McCollum begins his transfer portal trek.
