For its last regular season tournament of the season, the Iowa women’s golf team travelled down to Dallas, Texas, to compete in the Huntington Bank Collegiate Tournament, hosted by Southern Methodist University. The Hawkeyes finished 14th among 17 squads with a 24-over-par across three rounds.
Junior Maura Peters registered Iowa’s best individual performance of the tournament, shooting 3-over-par and tying for 34th place. Teammate Riley Lewis trailed at 44th overall with a 5-over-par. Ximena Benites, Kaitlyn Hanna, and Shannyn Vogler rounded out the group at 56th, 78th, and 80th place, respectively.
Peters found herself having a day in her first round of the tournament, recording a 1-over-par (73), with three birdies. She was the highest-finishing individual for the Hawkeyes, ending the first day in 47th place.
Concluding the second 18 holes, Benites climbed 16 spots individually, shooting a 1-under-par (35) on the back nine. The third-year shot a 73, helping the Hawkeyes finish day one in 14th place overall.
Both Benites and Lewis hit their stride early on in round 3. Lewis recorded seven birdies in her 1-under (71) round, with three consecutive on holes 2-4. Her third-year teammate was right beside her, also shooting a 1-under (71) with four birdies and 11 pars.
Lewis improved 16 spots and Benites 14 in the final round.
The Hawkeyes stayed in 14th place for the remainder of the day, ending the tournament 49 strokes behind the winner, Oklahoma State, which finished 25-under overall. Medalist honors were given to Oklahoma State’s Marta Silchenko, who recorded a 13-under (203) final score over the course of the three days.
The Hawkeyes will now have a bit of time to prepare before travelling to Glendale, California, for the Big Ten Championships on Friday, April 24th. They will compete over the weekend in hopes of finding a regional bid and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
