Iowa women’s basketball received a sizable blow to its roster Monday afternoon as talented first-year guard Addie Deal will enter the transfer portal, Talia Goodman of On3 reported. The agency representing Deal, Upper Echelon Basketball, announced the same and the guard released a statement on social media.
“Thank you to my amazing teammates, all the incredibly wonderful fans, my business partners, and the Iowa City community for their support over my first year,” her statement read. “I have learned a lot in my freshman season and look forward to continuing to grow as a result.”
Deal hails from Irvine, California, and arrived in Iowa City as the No. 2 ranked recruit in her home state and No. 18 overall prospect in her class, per ESPN.com. She played 15.5 minutes per game this season, averaging 5.1 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, earning a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
The guard primarily came off the bench but started three consecutive games following a season-ending injury to Taylor McCabe. In that stretch, Deal scored a combined nine points on 1-of-9 shooting from the field against USC, UCLA, and Minnesota.
Deal tallied double-digit scoring in four games this season, including 18 against Ohio State and a career-high 20 against Oregon.
“Thank you to the staff at the University of Iowa,” Deal added in the post. “I will always appreciate my time here.”
Deal is the second Iowa player to enter the portal, joining third-year guard Kennise Johnson. The portal window officially opens following the national title game on April 5 and continues through April 20.
