Harry Styles broke his four-year musical hiatus this March 6, with his new album, “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.” His last album, “Harry’s House,” shattered the internet with hit songs such as “As It Was” and “Late Night Talking.”
This new album from Styles was highly anticipated by his die-hard fans since its announcement in January this year. He released a single from the album before its official release date called “Aperture.”
People took to social media to share their thoughts on the new single — and there were mixed opinions. Some praised his new style and the experimental risks he took.
“Aperture” is no doubt an opposite vibe compared to the songs on “Harry’s House.” While some loved the song, many did not.
I, unfortunately, have to agree with the latter opinion. The song was a unique and unexpected piece from Styles, though I am not sure it landed with many fans of his previous two albums.
“Harry’s House” has a romantic, whimsical sound to it, whereas “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,” takes a more alternative, indie-rock route — minus “Coming Up Roses,” which sounds like it could have come straight from a fairy tale soundtrack with its violin and harpsichord sound.
My personal favorite off the new album is easily “American Girls.” It has a slow melody with an electronic beat. I think the song highlights Styles’ vocal range and power. Another favorite of mine is “Paint By Numbers.”
I think this song shows us Styles’ songwriting capabilities to their fullest. His ability to put the perfect music to his beautifully written lyrics is astonishing. I think that all of the songs on this new album reflect Styles’ growth as an artist, and the maturity that not only his music has had but also his fans.
“Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,” feels like starting a new life. It sounds like a peaceful contentment. It sounds like the finality of a situation.
I really appreciate Styles’ fearlessness in trying a new sound on all of his albums. It takes guts for an artist to take risks with their craft, but Styles’ loyal fanbase would most likely applaud absolutely anything he does. I think this style most emphasizes all of his strengths as a songwriter, singer, and producer. While other pop artists, such as Taylor Swift, tend to stick to what they know works, Harry Styles is unafraid of testing new avenues for his career.
Check out my personal favorites from “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,” which include the aforementioned “American Girls”,”Ready, Set, Go!” and “Carla’s Song.”
