The musical Head Over Heels is a University of Iowa student production Directed and Choreographed by Michael C. Flores in the E.C. Marie Theater in Iowa City.
The production explores a kingdom in Greece, performed in Elizabethan language, that is driven by song when it becomes threatened by a prophecy from an oracle. King Basilius, played by Brennen Malone, upon hearing about the threats to his kingdom goes to meet the oracle, Pythio the non-binary prophet played by Luis Avalos. He refuses to accept the words of Pythio, and drags not just his wife and daughters, but the entire kingdom into a wild goose chase.
His daughters Pamela and Philoclea, played by Hannah Anderson and Nicolette Mayer, have to follow their father while trying to discover where their hearts belong. Their mother Queen Gynecia, played by Zoe Mae Nolte, has fallen out of love with her husband and on this trip is forced to discover what she now desires. If there is no change, the kingdom is doomed to fail.
This story is filled with love, heartache, dirty humor, and is not confined by gender and sexuality in this “window into a more hopeful, more liberated future” according to their description. The show is held on two weekends of March 6-8 and 12-14 in the E.C Mabie Theatre.
