Excavation crews have broken up part of the southbound lane of Madison Street in Iowa City to repair a water main break in the area, resulting in minor traffic impacts.
Crews blocked the southwest section of Madison Street between Iowa Avenue and Washington Street between the Old Capitol and the University of Iowa’s Becker Communication Studies Building Wednesday.
The southern east-to-west crosswalk, the western north-to-south crosswalk, and the sidewalks around the Becker building were closed due to the construction.

Work on the site could be seen as early as Tuesday, with workers interfacing with the water main and water rising through relief cuts in the street, resulting in minimal flooding. The UI employed West Branch excavating firm Lynch’s Excavating to repair the break on Wednesday.
UI Public Relations Manager Chris Brewer wrote in an email to The Daily Iowan that repairs concluded Wednesday and the university is expecting no interruptions to regular water service.
Lee Hermiston, Iowa City public information officer, wrote the water line fell under the university’s jurisdiction, but that the city assisted in repair efforts.
According to a new release from the City of Iowa City, traffic impacts, including the closure of two stops for the 7 North Dodge bus route, will persist until Friday.
Brewer wrote additional but minimal work will be conducted in the following days, anticipating regular traffic to be restored by Friday.
