The Johnson County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved $662,443.62 in funding for two service contracts for county projects at its formal session Thursday.
The board approved a contract for a bridge replacement project to Peterson Contractors, Inc., a Reinbeck excavating and ground improvement contractor, amounting to $552,443.62 to replace the bridge at Derby Avenue SW, an area southwest of Iowa City in rural Johnson County.
The county notified residents via its website in April 2025 that the bridge at Derby Avenue SW showed “advancing deterioration” and would be closed until further notice. Previously, the bridge was able to support a maximum of three tons. After inspection, it was decided that the bridge was facing unsafe conditions.

The supervisors also approved an agreement with Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development of $110,000 to provide services at the Historic Poor Farm, a farm that has been owned by Johnson County since 1855. It is currently being restored by the Johnson County Historical Society.
According to the contract, Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development requested funding in the amount of $110,000, billed in monthly increments of $9,166, to provide planning and farm management services, mainly onsite farm management.
The agreement begins Thursday and remains effective until June 30, 2026.
