Track fans braved the sub-zero temperatures to fill the Hawkeye Indoor Track Facility on the first day of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational track meet hosted by the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Friday, Jan. 23. The Hawkeyes will be hosts to 16 teams spread throughout the midwest for the two day invitational. Those schools include Augustana, Bradley, Central Methodist (MO), Grinnell, Illinois Chicago, Illinois State, Indian Hills CC, Loras, Milwaukee, Minnesota State, Northern Iowa, Saint Francis, St. Ambrose, Western Illinois, and William Penn.
The day opened up with the field events of high jump and long jump. Spanning throughout most of the evening, the events ended with Carter Morton jumping 2.14, winning the men’s premier high jump for Northern Iowa, and Katy Stephens, competing unattached, winning on the women’s side with a jump of 1.71. Long jump ended with unattached Marc Morrison jumping 7.51m to win on the mens side, and Milwaukee’s Anna Szepieniec jumping 5.94m to win on the women’s side.

The Hawkeyes competing in jumping events were Carlee Rochford finishing 10th in women’s high jump with a jump of 1.56, and Sal Capaldo jumping 1.98 for 10th on the men’s side of high jump.
Hawkeyes Dominated the college level distance events with Ethan Eichhorn coming second in the 3000m, and a 1-2 duo on the women’s side of Rowan Boulter and Marissa Long. Elena Torres carried the 300m momentum into the premier heat, winning in decisive fashion.

Iowa dominated the women’s premier 200m, putting all 5 runners 1-5 with Chioma Nwachukwu leading the way. The Men’s side did not see the same success in the 200, with the three competing Hawkeyes falling in the 4-6 spots, with Tyrese Miller landing the 4 spot.
The Hawks will look forward to tomorrow, Jan 24, for the second day of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational where they will continue with more distance events, sprints, pole vault, triple jump. and relays.
