Returning to Carver Hawkeye Arena, fans awaited the highly anticipated in-state rivalry basketball game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Drake Bulldogs at Iowa City, Iowa on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025. The Hawkeyes defeated the Bulldogs 100-58.
The Hawkeyes came off of a dominant performance against the Evansville Purple Aces with a 119-43 win, bumping the team to a 2-0 record for the 2025-2026 season. Notable performances from the matchup included freshman center Layla Hay’s highest individual score of 20 points and Sophomore guard Chazadi Wright’s ten assists in her twenty-seven minutes of play.
The matchup started with a three pointer made by sophomore guard Chazadi Wright off of an early Drake turnover. Momentum began to grow after a soon after fast break layup by sophomore center Ava Heiden for a 5-0 score in less than 30 seconds of play. The Hawkeyes had a 14 point scoring run with notable offensive plays from Heiden and sophomore guard Emely Rodriguez. The Hawkeyes led the first quarter 25-9.
In the second quarter, two early three pointer by sophomore guard Taylor Stremlow upped the score to 31-9. The Bulldogs gained momentum with strong inside play, tightening the gap with a 19-35 score. Layups by Layla Hays, Hannah Stuelke, Journey Houston, and Emely Rodriguez combated the gap with a score of 45-20 leading into halftime.
The Hawkeyes did not let up the pressure going into the second half of play as the team doubled their previous half score with majority of the score coming from the bench players. Scoring 29 points in the third quarter and 25 points in the fourth, the dominance displayed portrays the overdeveloping depth of the Hawkeyes roster, most noticeably, their bench.
Notable performances from the matchup include a three-way-tie for highest individual score between Chazadi Wright, Ava Deiden, and Layla Hays, each scoring 14 points. Taylor McCabe led the team with five total assists. Layla Hays had the most rebounds of the night with ten total. The Hawkeyes are now 3-0 and ranked 21st in the NCAA Women’s Basketball rankings and the AP Top 25.
