The Iowa women’s gymnastics team finished its season at the NCAA Regional in Tuscaloosa on April 4, placing fourth and thus failing to advance to Sunday.
Against No. 6 California, No. 11 Alabama, and North Carolina, the Hawkeyes walked away with a 196.000 overall. California led all competitors with a 197.550, followed by Alabama with a 197.275. North Carolina narrowly led Iowa with a final score of 196.250.
For the Hawkeyes, first-year Aurélie Tran led with a 39.275 in the all-around, owing to a 9.850 NCAA debut on beam, a 9.825 on bars, and 9.800s on vault and floor. A Canada native who competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Tran led Iowa on bars and scored a 9.800 or higher in every event.
“What’s most amazing about her is that she’s very consistent in what she does,” first-year head coach Jen Llewellyn said in a February interview with The Daily Iowan. “She does a lot of extra mobility or rehab or prehab stuff on each event that you can tell she brought over from the elite world. She does a really great job taking care of herself outside of the gym and making sure that she’s ready to go every weekend. She’s very level-headed in everything that she does too.”
Third-year Karina Muñoz followed Tran with a 38.500 score in the all-around, including a 9.850 on floor and a 9.800 on vault. Meanwhile, fifth-year Adeline Kenlin, an Iowa City native, nabbed a 9.900 on beam to tie for second overall in the event.
The Hawkeyes’ season came to an end less than a week before the opening of a new training center for both gymnastics and spirit squads. The Nagle-Duda Gymnastics & Spirit Squads Training Center is set to be dedicated on April 10 at 3 p.m. local time.
“This facility lifts our program to new heights and will have such a positive impact on our current student-athletes and future Hawkeyes,” Llewellyn said.
