The Iowa football team acquired its second transfer player of the week in former Chattanooga receiver Sam Phillips. The fourth-year wideout will join the Hawkeyes for his final season of eligibly in 2025, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
A three-star transfer from 247 Sports, Phillips has one year of eligibility remaining.
Hailing from Cartersville, Georgia, Phillips posted 153 receptions for 2,338 yards and nine touchdowns over three seasons with the Mocs. After redshirting his first year in 2021, the 5-foot-9 Phillips set a program freshman record with a team-best 44 grabs for 661 yards and two scores. He earned an all-conference freshman team nod for the performance.
In 2023, Phillips recorded a career-high 60 receptions and four touchdowns. The following season, he posted a career-high 803 yards, including an 84-yard scoring grab against Georgia State. Phillips held his own against Power Four competition, reeling in a team-high five catches for 54 yards in the 2024 season opener against Tennessee.
The Hawkeyes have had mixed results with transfer wide receivers in recent memory. Ohio State’s Kaleb Brown arrived to Iowa amid plenty of hype in 2023 but collected just 24 catches in the Black and Gold before entering the portal again during the 2024 regular season. Brown committed to the University of Alabama Birmingham last month.
Northwestern’s Jacob Gill arrived on campus prior to this season and finished as the Hawkeyes’ team leader in catches and yards. Gill will return for his final season of eligibility in 2025. Fellow receiver transfer Seth Anderson arrived at Iowa in 2023 from Charleston but has only 16 catches in the Black and Gold, mainly due to injuries.
Iowa’s wide receiver room contains Gill, Anderson, as well as second-years Jarriett Buie, Reece Vander Zee, and Dayton Howard.
