FilmScene wrapped up its series, “FilmScene in the Park,” on Saturday, Oct. 5, with its showing of the original “Jurassic Park,” the Academy Award-winning film directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg and released in 1993.
The screening took place at Chauncey Swan Park, right outside of FilmScene in downtown Iowa City. The event was free for all audience members and seating was first come, first served, like the rest of the screenings in the series have been. Fans brought blankets, lawn chairs, and their favorite people to come together for a unique and special night.
“I’ve been to all but two [of the screenings this year] — I’m pretty proud of that. My favorite was ‘In the Mood for Love,’ event attendee Caroline Powell said.
There were many dedicated fans of local cinema events like “FilmScene in the Park” throughout the audience. Film lovers vouch for these outdoor screenings to stay available to the public, and Powell is most certainly one of them.
“I like how accessible they are. Every time I’m here, I see folks of all ages and backgrounds, which is great. I think it’s a really good opportunity to see movies I wouldn’t check out on my own,” Powell said.
One-time special events like these can sometimes be hard to access, especially for young students and community members between admittance fees or travel parameters. FilmScene has gotten over these barriers by implementing no admittance fee, plus the convenient location in downtown Iowa City with plenty of parking nearby curbs access issues.
“Cost is usually a barrier, so having it be pay what you can [or be] free has been nice, and I also like when they partner with local businesses,” Powell added.
The accessibility of the event is a main priority for FilmScene staff as it allows them to share an amazing experience with so many people.
“Going to the movies is a multi-generational tradition, and bringing people together to share that experience is our mission,” Andrew Sherburne, the executive director and co-founder of FilmScene, said.
Thanks to sponsorships from local Iowa City figures and the city itself, FilmScene was able to host this event for free for yet another season of outdoor screenings.
“We’re grateful for the sponsorship of Suzanne Stock and the partnership of City of Iowa City Parks and Rec for sharing that vision,” Sherburne said.
There are many regulars to these outdoor screenings, like Powell, but there are also many first-time faces in the crowd. Regardless of experience or film knowledge, there’s something for everyone.
“I love Jurassic Park, it’s what got me into science. I’m just gonna geek out and hang out with people that I love,” Brianna McNulty, another event attendee, said.
McNulty was another audience member satisfied with the accessibility and convenience of the FilmScene event.
“Sometimes the parking, I just don’t want to pay that and deal with that, but FilmScene has been good,” McNulty said.
Chauncey Swan Park was filled to the brim Saturday night, setting a new record for attendance, with first-time viewers and veteran moviegoers alike. With the film starting at sunset, fans sat under the stars as they enjoyed an experience they won’t soon forget.
“Over 4,000 people came to our 10 FilmScene in the Park screenings this year, a record number of attendees. We can’t wait for the fifth year of this new Iowa City tradition,” Sherburne said.
