Aaron Ohlsen walks through a prairie during pheasant hunting season at the Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area in Oxford, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023. Pheasant season in Iowa began on Oct. 28 and ends on Jan. 10, 2024.

This hunting season is seeing the highest population of pheasants in Iowa since 2015, which is attracting hunters from across the country to come to the state. Milder winters in recent years have allowed the pheasant population to fight off exposure to cold and access food underneath ice more easily, increasing their numbers this year.
