Iowa softball moved to 6-3 on the season after a weekend of games at the Torero Classic in San Diego.

Iowa opened the weekend taking on South Dakota State on Friday. The Hawkeyes defeated the Jackrabbits, 2-1. Sophomore pitcher Denali Loecker picked up her second win of the season.

Iowa then competed against DePaul on Friday in the second game of a doubleheader, falling to the Blue Demons, 13-0, in five innings. Hawkeye pitcher Breanna Vasquez struggled in the circle, giving up six hits and four runs in 3.1 innings of work.

On Saturday, the Hawkeyes took on UC Riverside, winning 7-0. Iowa had four players finish with two hits in the game, while Vasquez picked up the victory.

The Hawkeyes defeated University of San Diego, 3-1, in their second doubleheader of the weekend. Loecker picked up her third win of the season to move to 3-0 overall.

Iowa concluded its weekend in San Diego by taking on Oregon State on Sunday. The Hawkeyes fell to the Beavers, 7-2, as Vazquez suffered her second loss of the weekend to move to 3-2 on the season.

“Denali looked good again, we didn’t play well behind her or Bre,” head coach Renee Gillispie said in a Sunday release. “But the pitching staff looked solid this weekend. There are a few things we need to adjust on defensively, including being more aggressive. I think we will be ready to go next weekend in Leesburg.”

Iowa will travel to Leesburg, Florida, Feb. 25-27 for the second time this season to participate in the Spring Games.

The Hawkeyes will play North Florida, Notre Dame, Princeton, and Cornell. All games will be streamed on FloSoftball.
