Beating the same team twice in a season is never an easy accomplishment, let alone in the same week. However, that is exactly what the Hawkeyes did on Saturday night as they won in a tight, five-set match against Indiana.

The win was Iowa’s first in a five-set match in four attempts, and head coach Vicki Brown was excited to see the team fight through adversity.

“We made a couple changes to the lineup, but it shows our players, all 17 of them, have grit mentality even in adversity,” she said in a release.

The first set of the match set the tone as the two sides went back-and-forth. After Iowa raced out to a 13-8 lead, Indiana found its way back into the set with some big plays. Amiya Jones, with four kills in the set, gave the Hawkeyes the lead back after two consecutive kills. At 24-24, it was looking like another tight-set lost, but Grier Hughes and Hannah Clayton gave the Hawkeyes kills that got the team over the finish line.

The next three sets would be runaways by the respective winners, with the Hoosiers taking sets two and four and the Hawkeyes taking the third set.

Set five has been a bad sign for the Hawkeyes in the past, but this fifth set looked different. The Hawkeyes opened with a 2-0 lead before the two sides went back and forth to eight points.

Iowa’s big-time player was Amiya Jones as the sophomore dominated the closing stages of the game. Jones hit two kills and an ace to give the Hawkeyes a 10-9 lead. After Iowa squandered the lead and trailed 13-11, it looked as though Indiana had won the marathon.

However, clutch plays from Grier Hughes and freshman Kyndra Hansen saw the match through as Iowa won the set, 16-14.

Jones stood out in particular, as the sophomore notched 15 kills and seven aces — the latter which tied a Big Ten record this season.

“Our middles, Hannah and Amiya, had five great sets and our outsides balanced things out. Kudos to them,” Brown said in a release.

Iowa played much looser this match, with the Hawkeyes hitting percentage sitting at a mere .174. Although the Hawkeyes did not perform well statistically, the team’s grit showed through in what was the team’s toughest earned win yet.

The Hawkeyes fell to No. 20 Purdue in four sets in Friday night’s match.

Although Iowa came out strong in the first set, surprising the Boilermakers 25-20, Purdue gained steam and dominated the rest of the match. Purdue had 14 more kills and seven more blocks, but it was efficiency that made it an easy win in the end. Purdue had an incredibly high hitting percentage of .379, compared to Iowa’s lowly .192.

Courtney Buzzerio lead the team with 15 blocks, while Brie Orr tallied 35 assists.

The Hawkeyes will have the whole week to prepare for a big set of matches against Rutgers and Penn State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this coming weekend.
